Thanks for all the birthday love this week. It was great to hear from so many friends and family from all chapters of my life. It made me realize that I’ve been remiss in updating y’all on my continued recovery since returning to Austin in early December.
With the help of Doug, my parents, and a new medical team at UT, I’ve recovered well from surgery. My leg is healed, pain under control, and my mobility steadily improving. Since my amputation, I’ve learned that the Targeted Muscle Reinnervation procedure that I had is both uncommon and cutting edge with the intended benefit of reduced nerve and phantom pains. I continue to be so grateful to the amazing team at Ohio State for their care. They truly set me up for success as I approach this new phase of my life.
I had my first post-cancer scans at the end of January, and everything remained clear! All of your prayers and words of encouragement have made such a difference. They give me the strength and hope I need to guide my path forward, so please keep them coming.
Finally, I’m excited to report that last week I took my first steps in the prosthesis that is being built to meet my goals and needs. It was emotional to walk again after three long months. Using the prosthesis is difficult and going to require some serious hard work and focus. I’ve started working with a physical therapist to learn to walk and function in the world. It’s a humbling experience to learn these basic skills again, as I certainly don’t remember what it was like the first time in the early 80’s!
Below are a couple videos to show you some of my first steps and my latest trick – getting up and down off the floor. I’ll share more along the way and appreciate your continued interest, encouragement and support throughout this wild journey.
